Nite.Rinse Washes Over Reelworks-Draft

Nite.Rinse Washes Over Reelworks

Welcome to yet another Friday night in Denver on the cusp of summer. There’s a light breeze cooling the evening air and the atmosphere is heavy with good vibes. You know what that means, right? It’s time to put on your freshest fit and head to Reelworks in RINo. With the night hosted by Nite.Rinse, Reelworks became the place to be on Saturday night, May 7th. Filled to the brim with house-y vibes, brought to you by Mat.Joe and friends along with Nite.Rinse, this venue is definitely making it’s mark and these artists are solidifying it.

A Londen Summer(s) arrives in Denver

The festivities kicked off with Londen Summers, who absolutely destroyed her set. Coming ready to play, she stepped the tables in a “Bratz-y” outfit that just added to her whole aesthetic. Let’s not get it twisted though, her style wasn’t what spoke the loudest. Simply put, Londen Summers had some of the cleanest mixes I have ever heard. With seamless transitions and edits including popular songs in unique ways, she showcased her talent in impeccable form. Londen Summers kept the energy high, the vibes vibrant, and showed that it takes real skill to do what she does. If you haven’t heard of her, you will soon enough.

Muus and CutSnake bring the house down

Following the first act, Muus took to the stage with shades on and bottle in hand. I knew it was about to go down. With a “too cool for school” vibe, Muus opened up with a great deep house set, phasing in some tribal beats here and there. Though, my favorite edit he did was when he mixed a tribal percussion loop with the lead loop from “Put your hands up for Detroit” by Fedde Le Grand. So friggin’ good.

Afterwards, it was time for CutSnake to show us what was up and he did not disappoint. Let me start by saying this, my man was nothing but smiles when he hit the stage. Opening up with some tribal beats himself, CutSnake came ready to have a good time. Eventually, CutSnake transitioned to a deep house set with some awesome techno edits sprinkled in, concluding his time with some hard-hitting beats, the last ten minutes of his set was amazing. With CutSnake going heavy all the way through, you could feel the bass all the way to 38th and Blake.

Mat Period Joe

At long last, the main act arrived to give us a show. In true legendary fashion, Mat.Joe arrived on the scene joking around and having a good a time, making sure to show the previous act some much deserved love. Now, I’m not an earplug guy, I just find them uncomfortable, but I definitely wish I had some that night. The bass was astounding, startling people standing next to the speakers on nearly every drop, Mat.Joe made sure they were heard. But what really made Mat.Joe stand out was the call and response between both artists. Working almost in unison, Mat.Joe was able to switch off seamlessly while still being able to engage with the crowd and have fun with the people on stage.

An Honest Conclusion

As always, I’m going to be straight up with you guys. This kind of music is not necessarily my forte or even my favorite. With that being said, I still had an absolute blast watching these people work. See, even if something isn’t for you, that doesn’t mean incredible talent should not be recognized. You might not always understand the music, but you can always understand skill. Each one of these artists displayed what sets them apart. From their styles and vibes, to how they mixed and played their music, Mat.Joe and friends were still capable of blowing my naïve mind.  But isn’t that what we all want when we go to a show? To be able to walk out those venue doors and say “Damn, they killed that set?” If my assumption is correct and you said “yes,” then you missed out on a spectacular show.

Ludacris and friends take Red Rocks back in time

Ludacris and friends take Red Rocks back in time

Close your eyes and let me paint a picture for you. It’s a beautiful night at Red Rocks and you’re hiking up the stairs to the ticket gate. You finally reach the ticket attendant, collect your stub and proceed into the venue. But as you walk through the gate, something mysterious happens. You’re suddenly teleported to a time when FM radio reigned supreme. When your clothes couldn’t be baggy enough and everything had to match. A time when Fat Joe, Nelly and Ludacris ruled the airwaves and the culture. Now, I need you to open your eyes, take a deep breath, and register that it actually happened. On April 27th, Luda and friends transformed Red Rocks Amphitheater into a time capsule making for an unforgettable experience.

Red Rocks Goes All the Way Up

The night opened up with the crowd ready to “Lean Back” as Fat Joe took to the stage. Hailing from South Bronx, Fat Joe came with an engaging presence, laughing and conversing with the audience. Multiple times throughout his set, Joe would crack a joke that would have me dying in laughter. Humble enough to be an opener, the big man performed all the favorites from “All the Way Up” to classics like “Twinz.” The real beauty of Fat Joe‘s set was when he took time to honor fallen greats such as Big Pun and DMX. You could tell it was important to him that he did that, resulting in it becoming important to us.

Next up, the “Country Grammar” King exploded onto the scene ready to give us a show. Like Fat Joe before him, Nelly came ready to interact with the audience. Hugging fans in the front row and messing with security guards, Nelly made sure everyone was having a good time.  While Nelly played favorites such as “Air Force Ones” and “Grillz,” I couldn’t help but notice his drip. My man was wearing a chain that had to weigh at least 20lbs, shining brighter than the lights on the stage. Honestly, it was ridiculous but both performers came ready to fire up the crowd and set the tone.

The Luda in Ludacris

I’m gonna level with you guys, I have no idea where to start. Ludacris strolled out simply dripping in swagoo, and I was starstruck.  I mean, we as an audience were not prepared for what was in store for us. So Ludacris kicks it off with some hits and features, “Rollout” and “Act A Fool,” I mean the works. Next thing you know he’s performing “Holidae In” and in the middle of the song he cuts the record. Ludacris turns to the audience and says, “Nah, If we’re gon’ do this, we’re gon’ do this right.”

Out of nowhere, Chingy erupted from backstage and the crowd went nuts. Like a true icon, Luda yielded the stage to Chingy who of course performed the chart-topping hit “Right Thurr.” Throughout the night, Luda brought multiple artists up giving each one their time to shine. It was legendary to see Ludacris take on the rocks and bring so much entertainment. Rapping until the show literally couldn’t go on any longer, the lights cut on with an overwhelming feeling of satisfaction.

A Nostalgic Conclusion

I think it’s fair to say that for myself, and a lot of other people, this was a “Hip-Hop Mecca” moment. It was so amazing to see all these artists that I grew up with at the greatest venue in the world. Just like you, these legends have been a part of my life for what seems like forever. Fat Joe has been in our ears since the 90s, and now he’s part of the internet culture. Nelly is the reason I began my own music library and started scouring the radio for tunes. Ludacris was one of the first rappers that I saw from my generation translate from music to movies. Each one of these Icons has proven that they’re the best at what they do. Throughout the years, they have continued to find success and have become moguls in their own right. Like the big man says, “yesterday’s prices, are not today’s prices,” and yesterday’s kings are still conquering today’s stages.

Snow Tha Product Revs Up The Energy At Mission Ballroom

Over the past decade, Snow Tha Product is a name that has reined supreme within the the hip-hop community. However, her rise to fame was no coincidence. From battle rapping locals to pushing her CD’s on street corners; Snow’s come-up is a true underdog story. She continues to prove that both consistency and hard work are key factors to success in any industry.

To begin, Snow faced adversity from an early age. Claudia Alexandra Feliciano was born to undocumented Mexican American Immigrants. Growing up in San Jose, California, she took full advantage of ESL classes that were at her disposal. She quickly became fluent in both English and Spanish, which would later set her apart as the bilingual hip-hop heavyweight she is today. Its no secret that Snow takes great pride in representing both her English and Spanish culture.

Snow Tha Activist

Snow tells it like it is. She is known to be unapologetically outspoken on real world issues both off and on the microphone. Her 2017 bilingual feature on, “Immigrants (We Get The Job Done)”, addresses the oppression immigrants endure while living in the US today. A snippet from her verse states, “Racists feed the belly of the beast with the pitchforks, rich chores done by the people that get ignored.” In addition to immigration and politics, Snow is an activist within the LGBTQ community. She openly discusses her bisexuality; encouraging her listeners to stay true to themselves, despite opposition they may face from others.

Dale Gas

Although Mission Ballroom fits a capacity of nearly 4,000 patrons, Snow is able to share an intimate setting with her Denver crowd. This performance is for the ride or die fans, the “Product Pushers”.

The surge of energy is tangible in Mission Ballroom the moment Snow steps on stage. She kicks off her headlining performance with the appropriately titled single, “Dale Gas” which was also the inspiration for the “Dale Gas” Tour title. Ironically enough, only a few moments into the track; the music comes to an abrupt stop. Something is off. Snow pauses her performance to address an audio issue concerning the sound levels on the main stage.

She commands the audio engineers to, “Turn up the music on these wedges!”. She explains that she has been on a 2.5-year hiatus from touring, so her fans deserve the best show from her possible. The sound quality was not up to par for the comeback tour Snow was anticipating. A few moments passed and the DJ spins “Dale Gas” back to its intro; returning with a newfound intensity. The sound is on point, the party has officially begun. Snow has all of Mission Ballroom peaking with a revamped excitement for her performance.

Block Party At Mission Ballroom

Snow carried on the party at Mission Ballroom with no reservations. She goes on to perform her chart topping hits, such as “Butter” and “Wassap”. The show’s momentum is in full swing and the crowds excitement cannot be contained. In a blink of an eye, the celebration soon overflowed onto the mainstage! Snow handpicked a group of lucky concert goers to join her and the Dale Gas crew for the remainder of the night.

At this point, the atmosphere of the venue feels like an all out block party with close friends and family. Snow Tha Product’s Dale Gas tour revs up the energy at Mission Ballroom. It’s difficult to determine where the crowd stops and the performers begin. Snow is engaging in conversation with the audience, stage dives into the crowd several times and even took a celebratory shot of tequila or two. A night that will not be forgotten in a hurry for the Denver “Product Pushers”.

Tripp St Takes Over the Ogden

Seeming to come out of nowhere, the enigma known as Tripp st. took over the Ogden, in which he showcased his music. Adding to the night was an extraordinary visual experience from the Denver local “Nox Lumina“. The lineup included Maxfield, followed up by Templo. Then the one and only Kill Smth play as direct support for Tripp St.

All night, I kept hearing the same question being asked by curious fans, “who is Tripp St.?” He made his debut in just 2021 with an all-original 47-minute mix known as “Welcome to Tripp St.” Following up was his debut album “Welcome to Tripp St ” released on Clozees record label Odyzey. Not much is known about Tripp St. With speculations floating around that it’s a side project of a much larger artist such as Pretty Lights, Tipper, or GvO. Although many are skeptical of these rumors, one thing we are sure of is that he’s not new to producing. So the question remains who is Tripp St?

The Openers

He got the night started in one of Denver’s most beloved venues, the Ogden with a capacity of about 1,600 people. The building is filled with history, closing its doors in 1917 as a theater and re-opening in 1993. Tonight, it will host Tripp St. as he takes over the Ogden.

Starting the night off as people fill in the dance-floor was Maxfield. With a slow-building eerie intro that drops into his unique style of production in which he seemed to blend ambient sounds with some trip-hop-inspired drums, layered with some deep bass . Contributing to the Maxfield experience was Alyssa Rose on visuals giving fans a visual experience of the music. Following up was Templo coming out the gate strong with his glitchy hip-hop-inspired tunes that had the people moving. At this point in the night, the Ogden is starting to feel like a sold-out event. The energy in the room was high and filled with excitement for the night ahead.

A wave of silence hits the crowd as everyone prepares themselves for the underground legend Kill Smth. The Denver local put on a jaw-dropping performance living up to the hype that surrounds his name. He played his deep experimental bass tunes with a touch of some drum and bass that had the crowd going nuts. In addition, Glass Crane and Actulize were on visuals taking fans on an all original pilgrimage through bass and time.

Headliner

At this point in the night, the venue is filled with people shoulder to shoulder. Tripp St. takes over the Ogden with a slow-burning intro with cinematic properties, which leaves the audience in an almost meditative state, preparing themselves for what is to come. For the next hour, Tripp St. took the people on a journey through sound mending genres together. This was carried by the steady flow of euphoric free form bass and a combination of classical instruments with a touch of hip hop and funk to tie the whole thing together.

Conclusion

Overall, It was another incredibly unforgettable night at the beloved Ogden. Tripp st. along with his stunning lineup of support, gave his fans an experience they will never forget. Although we did not find out who the man behind Tripp st. is, he did speak on the mic for the first time leaving us more curious about who this man is. We are excited to see what all these amazing artists have in store for the years to come. You can catch Tripp St. again traveling to Iowa for Kosmic Kingdom in June.

Kruza Kid and Manic Focus Release the Banger “Daze”

Kruza Kid and Manic Focus Release the Banger “Daze”

Born and raised in Denver Colorado, Kruza Kid is a force to be reckoned with. He is a lyricist that has hooks that jump out and stick with you immediately. What do you get when you pair this with the groovy sensations of Manic Focus? You get a combination that is bound to make you hit that repeat button loop. “Daze” is going to be an instant hit on speakers across the Mile High city, as it has everything that can keep the audience entertained.

Manic Focus and Kruza Kid A Match Made In Heaven

With both of them rooted in Denver Colorado and having their respective following, it is just a matter of time till we got this rip-crushing match. The funky grooves that Manic Focus is known for are especially prevalent on “Daze”, which instantly is met with the conscious lyrics that make Kruza Kid such a force. Immediately following we’re met with heavy bass to switch the beat up. All of this is happening while we’re still getting treated to the mid-western guitar in the background. This helps create the stability of the track, while also providing a fantastic theme.

The track offers a level of uniqueness that can be so heavy and relaxed at the same time. It’s certified to be flexible on any track list, and also leaves the door open to many remixes. The catchy hook, “Just sitting in a daze, with that smoke in my face”, immediately gets locked into your brain. This is guaranteed to get some spins on it, and more than matches up with the style of other big-name artists. It’s so rare when two artists can lay something down that blends so naturally, but they accomplished this and more.

Give The Track A Listen and Check Kruza Kid Live

Kruza Kid dropped “Daze” in perfect timing, before his huge concert at Beacon. We’re gonna see him perform with dub-step staples Wick-It the Instigator and Mr. Willis for Party Guru’s own Frequency Sessions. What other way to celebrate the new release of a banger, than to follow it up with a huge performance? This is bound to be a good time, so make sure you make it out!

Porter Robinson Brought Nurture To The Rocks

Porter Robinson Brought Nurture To The Rocks

Porter Robinson is a name that echos through the EDM scene, as he has continuously influenced the genre since debuting with Spitfire in 2010. Even Billboard acknowledged that he was gonna be a force for years to come by having him on their list of 21 people under 21 to watch. This was a prolific start to an already storied career. Porter’s last time performing at Red Rocks was under his DJ moniker Virtual Self in 2018, but this time, he brought a full-fledged tour to Red Rocks to open the season.

The Concept Of The Tour

Porter is extremely meticulous in every aspect of his tours to properly present his vision. Each artist brings something different to the table, but everything blends seamlessly. You rarely see an artist able to curate a lineup that feels like each act is on the same label. Most importantly, this tour had one goal, and that was to give Porter the confidence to break out in full sing-a-longs. This is where Porter can allude to the tour and album’s name, Nurture.

Porter Opening For Himself

There was a mysterious act double-booked for both nights, which started right at doors and played for an hour and a half. Most people have never heard of Air To Earth, and little did people know that this was actually Porter Robinson. This is an ambitious feat as it puts him collectively playing three and a half hours of music, of which two hours of it is all performed live. It’s a sight to behold whenever an artist can pull this off at the extreme altitude of Red Rocks while performing at the highest level.

The Curated Artists

We briefly discussed how Porter is meticulous with the artists that he brings along on tour, but the placement of each act was perfect. The highs from Air To Earth led right into Qrion, then Wavedash takes control of the audience with their powerful and intricate style. All of this is topped off with day-specific artists Machinedrum and Magdalena Bay. Both of these artists set the floor perfectly for Porter to give in his own words, his best performances in ten years.

Porter’s Best Performance In Ten Years

He has come out and ranked these performances above his own music festival Second Sky performances. This is unique, but it is only possible by being as calculated as possible, and continuous tweaking. Songs that were once hard to imagine being played live were instant highlights. Most notably, Wind Tempos, which went from sweet melodies to jumping rhythms. For the encore, one of the main singles off of Nurture, Get Your Wish, feels like a perfect goodbye to a world. It was the vision of, “It will serve you in due time” coming to a reality. Clearly, the peak of emotions for Porter after pouring his craft on stage.

“Thank You, I’ll Say Goodbye Now”

To conclude what was a visually and soundly outstanding performance, he finished with a sing-a-long to Goodbye To A World. Almost hinting that he will be back, and to our surprise, he announced the return of the Second Sky Music Festival in late October. A world that he can control while having more control to fully immerse everyone into his vision. The crowd was brought to tears with all of us saying goodbye, but knowing this won’t be the last journey we share. It’s the perfect ending to what has been a memorable return to Red Rocks for the first shows of the season.

Latto Brings Big Energy to The Ogden

Latto Brings Big Energy to The Ogden

Do you know what I love about Denver? There is no amount of cold weather that will stop us from going to a show. With a line out the door well into the second act, this was leading up to be an unforgettable night. On a chilly Wednesday night, Latto along with special guests Saucy Santana and Kali, graced the Ogden Theater with their infectious presence. On tour to promote her new album “777,” Latto packed the house with a sold-out show. High in energy and drenched in heavy-hitting beats, I’m remorseful for anybody who missed out.

Performances

J Young MDK kicked the night off, followed by Kali and Saucy Santana. Kali burst onto the stage playing all the favorites from “MMM MMM” to “Do a Bitch.” Her outfit, consisting of nothing but black leather, screamed of influence from greats like Left Eye and Lil’ Kim. Shortly after, Saucy Santana emerged before the crowd, ready to keep the energy alive. Saucy was nothing but smiles, bringing audiences members on stage to perform. Both artists, engulfed in their performances, never hesitated to stop and take care of the fans, halting the show to help people out of the crowd and hand out water, which the people appreciated.

Main Event

“Latto! Latto! Latto!” is all you could hear as the crowd writhed in anticipation. Finally, after a 45-minute intermission, the Queen arrived ready to put on a show. The stage was set with a casino theme and followed by two amazing dancers, Latto turned the stage into a dance floor. She strolled out in an all “fur” outfit that screamed, “this will be a night to remember.” Playing chart-topping hits such as “Energy” and “Sunshine,” this show became a melting pot for a good time.

Conclusion

In Conclusion, even though this concert was phenomenal from start to finish, this wasn’t just a regular show. As I looked around, I realized this was an environment of inclusion. Different walks of life from different communities, like LGBT and BIPOC, congregated under one roof to enjoy some fantastic music. It was apparent that everyone was there to enjoy themselves, that’s it. With performers that come from said communities themselves, you knew it was ok to be yourself. At the end of the day, it didn’t matter what you looked like or where you came from, we all said “F*ck Rice Street” that night.
