Lipgloss: An Indie Dance Party

The USA’s longest-running indie dance party was started here in Denver in 2001. In that time, Lipgloss has watched the city grow and change and has done so itself. In March, Lipgloss grew again and moved to its new venue at HQ Denver. Learn more about this fantastic weekly dance party below!

Lipgloss: The Venue History

With over 20 years of weekly events, Lipgloss has been an event you may have gone to without even knowing. Here is where Lipgloss has been hosted over the years:

  • It started at an LGBTQ Bar (coincidentally where HQ is now) in 2001
  • La Rumba starting in 2004
  • Beauty Bar (Now Closed) beginning in 2012
  • Syntax Physic Opera (Now the Roxy) in 2013
  • Milk Bar since 2015
  • And Now HQ Denver since March of 2022

Lipgloss: What is it?

When Lipgloss started all those years ago, the goal was to create a unique niche dance party. Although they rely primarily on indie music nowadays, they are known to throw genre-bender parties and play whatever sounds good, regardless of genre.

Some past acts have included the Smiths, MGMT, Marky Ramone of the Ramones, and so many more! The last venue they were at was a lot smaller, so they couldn’t bring many of the more significant acts they had wanted, but now with the venue change, magic is in the making!

Lipgloss: Let’s go!

Now that you’ve heard the colorful history of Lipgloss: an Indie Dance Party, you need to go check it out for yourself! Head down to HQ Denver on South Broadway every Friday. There’s no cover before 10 PM; after, it’s only $5. On top of that, HQ Denver has fantastic drink specials! This month they have some spooktacular things happening, including a Thriller Brunch and a DJ set from Neon Indian. For more info, head to their website!

Get ready to vibe out at Meow Wolf for Rome In Silver’s first headline show in Denver on 10/15! Vinny Pisciotta, known musically as Rome In Silver, has been on the rise for quite a while with his presence on lineups like Bonnaroo 2021, Okeechobee 2022, Lightning in a Bottle 2022, and support on Dabin’s Between Broken 2022 tour. The general vibe of Rome In Silver’s music is vibrant, bass-forward, melodic, and unique. What one could expect in a Rome In Silver set is much more than just one specific vibe or genre. Rome In Silver breaks barriers in his sets by incorporating different genres. Notably, he plays anything from vibey breakbeat drum and bass to experimental wubs, then brings it back to his familiar melodies. No matter where Rome In Silver plays, whoever is present will go on a musical journey through the facets of electronic music.

Many fans are excited to see how Rome In Silver’s cutting-edge production will play out among the infamous confines of the Meow Wolf venue! After experiencing some of his previous sets, it’s safe to say that his energy matches the immersive nature of Meow Wolf. Despite performing on 10/14, the night before Meow Wolf at Red Rocks, as direct support for Louis The Child, Vinny is excited about this specific event. Specifically, he states, “This is my very first headline show in Denver, so naturally, my excitement level is through the roof. Meow Wolf is going to be one hell of a show!” Rome In Silver has a couple more remaining tour dates through New Year’s Eve.

Krushendo Goes Big with Destruction Ft BVLVNCE, Opening For Sullivan King on 8/26 in Boulder

End Your Summer at Temple Denver: August Lineup

The end of summer is almost here, but the decks are just heating up at Temple Denver. With some of the hottest acts, this month’s lineup at Temple is sizzling, and they aren’t even halfway done with announcements yet. Peep the deets of Phase 1 of the August lineup below!

SNBRN Friday, Aug. 5th

Bringing the West Coast beach vibe, SNBRN will be kicking off the party. SNBRN launched his career in 2014 after studying music production. He is a remix legend, with amazing remixes of “Sexual Healing” and “Gangsta Walk“. Outside of his amazing remixes, he recently dropped his new track, “Not the Only One.” It has some high-energy house vibes that we absolutely adore.

Tommy Trash Saturday, Aug. 6th

Hailing from Down under, Tommy Trash is bringing the electro-house fire. A veteran in the EDM scene, Tommy Trash has several chart-topping bangers and is Grammy nominated. After taking a break from the stress of the industry, Tommy Trash has come back even better than before. When he isn’t making music, he helps other artists under his label  Milky Wave. His latest track, “Jaguwawa“, dropped on Soundcloud earlier this year, and it’s an absolute banger.

Skepsis & 1991 Saturday, Aug. 13th

From across the pond, Skepsis and 1991 are hitting the decks August 13th. Skepsis is a UK bass beast. With support from artists like Diplo and Jauz, Skepsis has toured all over the world and played several festivals. His most recent remix, “BBCC“, dropped a couple months ago and definitely has that festy bass vibe to it.

1991 is a London drum and bass producer and DJ who has taken the genre by storm. After being handpicked to join MTA Records, he has released banger after banger and was voted Best Newcomer at the Drum & Bass Awards. 1991 just dropped an album titled “Odyssey” earlier this month, and we just can’t get enough of it. Together, this duo will be a sick set definitely not to miss.

Wrapping up the Phase 1 lineup is Hozho, who is performing on August 25th. Hozho hails from Portugal and created his own genre of music – “melodark.” This dark and melodic vibe envelops all that Hozho is. “Honey Trap” was released earlier this year. It reinforced his unique style, diversifying the Plague Doctor from the pack and disregarding the current dance music meta for something more intrinsically expressive, remembering the mythical quote from Charles Bukowski: “wherever the crowd goes, run in the other direction.”

Hozho, Thursday Aug. 25th @ Temple Denver

Wrap Up

Whether in the mood for high-energy house or dark and melodic techno, Temple Denver has an artist playing in August that fits every vibe. To learn more about the lineup and to purchase tickets, visit Temple Denver’s site.

Sacred Acre: A Passion Project on the Kenai

Do you have something that ignites a passion in you so intensely you want to shout it to the world? Two of those passions of mine are Electronic Music and Alaska! This September, those two worlds collide at the Sacred Acre Festival on the Kenai Peninsula in Ninilchik, Alaska!

I had a chance to speak with the founder of Sacred Acre, Chris Miller, and in speaking with him, I found out it only takes one moment for an idea to be born. One night, in 2018, his wife read a passage out loud from a book by Ivo Dominguez, “The ‘Sacred Acre’ is  a place that lies between low and high tide because in this magical place—two worlds collide. By high tide, it’s swum by sea creatures; by low tide, it’s walked by land animals. So in this magical place, we come to re-center ourselves, to harmonize with land and sea, and to find a sense of mindfulness unlike any other.”

This struck home for Chris. He knew there was a market for an Electronic scene in Alaska, and this created the perfect story for a festival. When putting this festival together, Chris covered everything, a fantastic lineup, transportation, accommodations and sustainability.

The lineup has Electronic music heavyweights like Clozee, Opiuo and LSDream. These artists and their music are a perfect fit for the magic that will come to life in Alaska. In addition, they recently added keyboard legend Jason Leech who will be sure to play some flipped versions of songs we know and love. However, fantastic music does not stop there. On the lineup, there are even some Alaskan locals. Clint Samples and PREPMODE are some of the DJ’s on the lineup from the Last Frontier. Anchorage, Alaska-based artist PREPMODE is known for his turntable and mixing skills. While out here at Sacred Acre I’ll be jamming to music I know and love, but I will also be branching out to see what else can bless my ears.

Being from Alaska, one of the main reactions I get when I tell people where
I am from is that it must be hard to get around. This could not be farther from
the truth in considering Sacred Acre! The team has put a lot of thought into
the logistics of this festival, like getting to the festival and getting
camping gear. Festival goers can step off the plane in Anchorage and get on a
shuttle that will take them to the festival grounds, where if they choose to
rent camping gear, it will be waiting for them too! Several types of
campgrounds at the festival range from lightly wooded areas to a site that
overlooks the Cook inlet with a chance to view otters, seals and whales!

I also got to speak with Chris about some recommendations he has if people
choose to explore Alaska beyond the festival. Along the Kenai, two cities to
visit are Homer and Seward! If you make your way down south of the festival,
you will find the city of Homer. This city sits along the Kachemak Bay and has
tons to offer visitors. One restaurant in Homer Chris recommends he is the
Green Can. It is known for its seasonal menu, delicious craft cocktails, and
sustainably caught seafood. When I make my way to Homer, I know this will be a
can’t miss stop! One last recommendation he has is to drive north to see North
America’s tallest mountain peak, Mt. Denali, formerly known as Mt. McKinley.
The camping is gorgeous up there and is the perfect time of year to see the
fall foliage. Alaska is so vast this list could go on forever!

One of the many great aspects of this festival is its sustainability
practices, which are dear to many festival attendees. This festival will be a
NO PLASTIC event which is just one of the many reasons this festival should get
a lot of love! In addition, Sacred Acre will boast hydration stations for
refillable water bottles, and reusable metal cups for alcohol sales, and all
vendors will use compostable and recyclable materials. Lastly, the creators and
producers of Scared Acre will be using part of the proceeds from the festival
to donate to local and national charities. These charities expose fishing
companies that use unethical fishing practices like trawling.

If you would like to find out more about the different types of trawling
that are destroying our oceans, please visit:
