Riding the biggest momentum wave in EDM right now are the Chicago boys known as Levity. The dubstep trio have been steadily climbing the ranks of the scene, boosting their marketability over the past two years, and the tide doesn’t look like it’s receding anytime soon. Fresh off last year’s 360-degree stage tour, Levity is back again with their aptly named Lasership tour.
The surprises kicked off early at Denver’s Mission Ballroom, where the recently resurrected GRiZ joined EDM’s hottest boy band on stage to debut their new, unreleased collaboration. As the opening track’s bassline hit, the venue lit up with the structure of a massive spaceship with the DJs and decks perched on top.
What followed was what can only be described as an unrelenting visual assault of lasers peppering the crowd. The rainbow-themed light show illuminated the night as if to guide the dance party under the breathtaking display of colors. From the array of colored lasers, a chameleon-like space ship emerged whose colors adapted to each thematically cued song, or the multicolored flames heating up the crowd with each fiery track.
Levity’s catalog thrives on catchy hooks and modern, bass-heavy remixes of nostalgic 2000s classics. These included an early serenade of Brittany Spears’ “Toxic” to a Levity remix of Mac Miller’s “Best Day Ever.” But threaded between those fan-favorite moments was the real backbone of the set: an absolute motherlode of IDs from Levity friends like Tape B, GRiZ, and Crankdat.
The 90-plus-minute performance synced seamlessly with one of the most impressive light shows I’ve ever seen at Mission Ballroom. More than 70 lasers armed their centerpiece spaceship.
The combination of high-end production, lovable lyrics, and earth-shaking basslines proved that these Chicago natives aren’t just capitalizing on their momentum, they’re doubling down. With next year’s Red Rocks headliner on the horizon, Levity doesn’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon.
