Mashup extraordinaire Z-Trip with scratch master QBert brought a funky old-school experience to Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom Saturday March 7th. These two artists have played for crowds of thousands at festivals and shows. Last weekend, show attendees got the chance to be up close and personal, and witness true ability on the decks.

Z-Trip owned the stage solo scratching and mixing, mashing up unexpected songs all across the genre board, giving the crowd everything from Yelawolf to Black Sabbath on top of harmonica blues. QBert hopped on the stage. The two turntable veterans gave a tireless back and forth with insane skill. QBert handles vinyl expertly. His fingers go crazy on the decks, the man scratches a record like he’s playing the piano. Classic funk, soul, hip-hop, jazz, rock, contemporary hits and obscure parts in between morphed into one seamless jam. Together they juggled multiple songs, beats, and surprises with agility.

DJ QBert is considered by many in the scratching community to be one of the greatest. QBert became friends and performed with Mix Master Mike at the beginning of his career. His talent and abilities with scratching vinyl and mixing have inspired the styles and ambitions of many modern artists. Z-Trip also holds high integrity and history in the electronic and hip-hop communities. He’s collaborated with legends including DJ Shadow, Public Enemy, and Talib Kweli. Both artists are winners of DJ Times magazine’s “America’s Best DJ” awards.

Local fresh talent also blessed the stage. Cellist and producer Jordan Polovina also performed at Cervantes. (Check out his Soundcloud for some great tracks and remixes), as well as the Dirty Gems, composed of Kruza Kid and Brisco Jones. The Dirty Gems are described on their Facebook as a “hip-hop/electronic duo incorporating live vocal loops, emceeing and vinyl scratching production”.

Z-Trip and QBert are no strangers to performing with one another. Witnessing such skill on the decks by two veterans made for a special night. The intimacy and at-home feeling Cervantes brings was the best venue to experience this dynamic, seasoned team of turntablists.
