Tico Time River Resort near Aztec, New Mexico, will once again host a pair of groovy, family-friendly music festivals in May 2024. Located in the Animas River Valley, just outside Durango, Colorado, the resort is a haven for adventure seekers.

Next year’s Rise and Vibes Music Festival takes place over three days, from May 10th to 12th. Boasting a variety of performers that include reggae, roots, world, and dance music, the chill vibes are sure to resonate throughout. The following week, from May 17th to 19th, the resort hosts the Tico Time Bluegrass Festival. A wondrous weekend of bluesy jams awaits attendees.

Tico Time offers a range of accommodations depending on your preferences and sprawls over 82 acres of gorgeous Four Corners wilderness. With access to tons of fun activities, there’s something everyone in your crew will love. With front range favorite Sonic Bloom recently announcing that its long-running festival will be on hiatus in 2024, Rise and Vibes and the Bluegrass Festival make the perfect alternatives.

Unleashing Your Finest Fest Self

Before we explore the resort and its diverse lodging and leisure opportunities, let’s talk entertainment! Each festival boasts over 25 performances across two stages to keep fans frolicking for three days and nights of fun.

The Beach Stage offers a unique waterside environment with a sand dance floor. The Pavilion Stage is a more intimate, covered event space with an open dance area for fans. In addition to taking in the tunes, attendees can enjoy fire spinning and live art presentations.

Beyond the music, you can find your beat — and your beads — with onsite craft vendors. Alternatively, take time to stretch out and slow things down with daily yoga classes and workshops. After filling your soul, fill your physical form with food vendors focusing on healthy and organic options, including vegan and vegetarian offerings. If you prefer to wash down that satisfying food with a tasty craft brew, you’ll have beers from Santa Fe Brewing Company to quench you. Fill any last-minute shopping needs at the onsite general store.

Get Up While Gettin’ Down

Blazin’ hot reggae and roots headliners highlight this year’s Rise and Vibes Festival bill. Don’t miss this chance to see Steel Pulse, Tribal Seeds, J Boog, and The Elovators in this open-air wonderland. If you’re more into the ambiance of world music or electronica, fret not. Sizzling sets from Beats Antique, Wookiefoot and Porangui are sure to please.

Additional genre-bending groups I’m looking forward to catching include Free Creatures, Tatanka, and The Copper Children. The selection of musical performances looks phenomenal. Check out the event page for details, and get all the artist info and links for the full lineup here.

Don’t be Blue, Unless it’s Bluegrass!

Whether you’re risin’ and vibin’ the prior weekend or not, bring your dancing feet (‘cuz shoes are optional in the sand) for Tico Time Bluegrass Festival! Kicking off just five short days after the conclusion of Rise and Vibes, there are three more days and nights of enjoyment in store. Get ready for a red-hot selection of cool blues artists groups from Colorado and beyond slated to perform.

Bluegrass Festival headliners include Railroad Earth, Elephant Revival, Kitchen Dwellers, and The Lil Smokies. Each of those bands is familiar to the Denver scene and played multiple nights around the area during 2023. Now, we get them all in one place!

The talent runs deep, with local favorites Pick & Howl, Tenth Mountain Division, Liver Down The River, and Drunken Hearts on the bill. I’m also excited to see some star-studded collaborations like Electric Larry Land and Sticks N’ Thorns. Keep yourself in the know by RSVPing to the event page, and prime your playlist with the full bluegrass lineup before you go.

Take Time to Explore Tico Time

Introductions are overdue for anyone unfamiliar with the Tico Time Resort, the Bluegrass Festival, or Rise and Vibes. First, let’s look at the facilities and their incredible amenities.

Designed to be a camping and festival destination, Tico Time provides various choices for where and how you want to stay. Attendees can go big with glamping sites for up to four people. If you’d like to bring your RV, there are full hookup sites that can also accommodate multiple cars. I wouldn’t wait too long, as they’re going quickly or already (some are already on wait-list status).

For a minimalist experience, you can choose car camping or walk-in tent sites. Upgrade that experience with a VIP Riverside plot. Anyone planning on staying in the area can get day passes and park near the box office. See the detailed facilities map here. Both events will use the same camping and stage layouts.

Before or between artist performances, you can warm up by taking a scenic hike and then cool down with a swim at the beach. Onsite entertainment options include a 130′ water slide, two water jump slides, riverside beach volleyball courts, and an 18-hole disc golf course. Play in the water on the tubes, rafts, kayaks, or stand-up paddle boards — it’s included with admission. For the more adventure minded, add a zip-lining or river-tubing tour to enhance your experience.

But Wait… There’s More?!

There are many inclusive perks to ensure your stay is enjoyable. You’ll find water fill stations to keep you hydrated while you shake and bake. WiFi access throughout the resort helps you stay connected to friends and share your experiences during your downtime. Speaking of chillaxing, don’t forget to check out the beach fire pit, shaded pavilion, and river overlook. After getting down, you can get clean with laundry and shower facilities onsite. Making sure to keep the haven pristine, Tico Time is an environmentally conscious facility and offers aluminum and single-stream recycling.
