The New Mastersounds performance on Thursday, Oct. 10th reminds us that small and intimate venues can sometimes hold the most powerful performances. As a matter of fact, the band brought Boulder’s Fox theater alive with their funky and soulful sound. The New Mastersounds groove grew out of the U.K. retro-soul scene. Because of this, their style consists of old-school instrumental funk, with a contemporary energy and enthusiasm that had the audience at their mercy. In other words, if you haven’t heard this band’s music, you are missing out on a key sound in funk and souls musical history.

As they announced that night, this is the 20th year the band has been together. The band was created by Eddie Roberts (lead guitar) in 1999, and Simon Allen (drums). In addition, Pete Shand (bass) and Joe Tatton (keys and organ) joined the The New Mastersounds. Lamar Williams Jr played more than half the set with the band. The moment he sang his first bar, the audience was in love. During the performance, Lamar Williams Jr presence added an energy that the band and the room swept-up and danced with. Lamar Williams Jr is featured in the bands new album, “Shake it”. To put it another way, the room swelled with energy, and the audience’s attention was acutely focused on every movement of their soulful sound.
