An Interview With Future Joy

Up and coming musical duo Future Joy has been blazing a trail of success for themselves for the past 2 years. They’ve began making quite a name for themselves in a relatively short amount of time and have become one of the most exciting funk and bass music duos to keep our eyes on.

We’re thrilled to say that we’ve recently had the chance to get to know them a little better and ask a few questions in the form of an email interview. The eclectic duo filled us in with the details behind their newest single “Triple Stack” featuring Vibe Street. They’ve also let us in on some of their biggest musical inspirations as well as some backstory on themselves as artist on their journey into and through the music scene both as individuals and as a duo.

Interview: Future Joy

Party Guru Press: Lets start by talking about your newest single “Triple Stack” with Vibe Street. The song is funky and upbeat and seems like it would’ve been a lot of fun to work on…

-What was the best part of working on this new release?

-Is there anything worth telling telling about the creative process that shaped this one?

-What is your relationship with Vibe Street like and are there any plans to work with them again in the future?

Future Joy: We met Ben, aka Vibe Street at Mad Mountain festival in Casper, WY the summer of 2020. We brought our RV/renegade stage and were able to jam with him after his sets. We hit the road full-time shortly after.

In November we headed back to Colorado for some other recording sessions and got word that Ben and our friend Austin were working on music. We drove straight through from Arizona, arrived around 2am and started recording. We spent the whole weekend working on a few different projects but this song was the most fun.

Austin started with a ukulele bass line, Zach laid Baritone sax, Ben did the rap, Emily played the synth line and sang the backups, Kyle was there for moral support- the song was starting to take form. It was truly a family collab! We enjoyed our time hanging at Ben’s studio and I think we would all enjoy making another song together sometime soon.

Party Guru Press: So how did you two meet? what initially sparked your creative flow as a duo?

Future Joy: Zach attended a karaoke night that Emily was hosting in May of 2019. We both sang, then Zach asked her to sit in with his band the following night, and we’ve been making music together ever since. This was just the beginning. Now we’ve been living on the road in our RV for over a year and have played 80+ shows!

Party Guru Press: You are clearly both quite musically inclined; not just with music production but with actual instruments as well. Of course we know you love to incorporate the saxophone, which you seem to feature feature throughout the majority of your songs…

-So where did that all come from? What got you started playing music and specifically saxophone in the first place?

Future Joy: Zach started playing saxophone in fifth grade. Emily started piano lessons in grade school and classical vocal trining in high school. We both spent the last 10 years as club/bar DJs. So we were well trained in the dj/electronic side, as well as many other genres of music.

Zach has always been playing sax with DJs, so combining the live element with the tracks just made sense. Emily had been singing in bands, and playing bedroom piano, so it also made sense to start combining everything. We added the piano to the set last winter and its been fun to watch the project grow.

Party Guru Press: How has your creative process evolved since you originally began your musical journey? Do you have a routine for producing? Also how does that reflect in your newest project?

Future Joy: Our only routine for producing is to get friends involved. Collaboration is really what takes our songs to the next level. On this project Ben and especially Austin wanted to stay behind the scenes though, so you only get his first name and no artist name. Hehe..

Party Guru Press: Who are your biggest influences or other artists within your genre that have helped inspire your style of music? And do you ever take influence from artist that aren’t necessarily in the same realm or genre that you produce? Have any of them added any additional inspiration to your new release? Or any of your releases?

Future Joy: Zach grew up in Denver playing funk, jam, and electronic. The scene in Denver is so eclectic it really helped him expand his sax playing and enjoyment of many genres. In electronic Music; Daft Punk, Deadmau5, and Excision are early inspirations. On the Sax Sonny Rollins, and Skerik are his big inspirations.

Emily grew up outside Chicago and House music runs through her veins. She had the chance to see world-class acts come through the city and takes inspiration from Anabel Englund, Nicolas Jaar, and Disclosure. She spent the past 9 years DJing and singing at weddings and corporate events so musical diversity was important. It’s fun to be able to play funk, pop, dance, house, rock, hip hop, dub, and bass all at the same party. We strive to stay eclectic in our Future Joy sets too.

Party Guru Press: So 2021 looks like it has been a busy year for you two… Whats been some of the biggest highlights so far?

Future Joy: We had some great shows and festivals this year. Notably: Fool’s Engagement Festival in Branford, FL and being able to fill-in last minute for Russ Liquid, opening for Manic Focus in Gainesville. FL. We also had a blast at our Denver homecoming at Your Moms House in July.

Party Guru Press: We see that you have a show coming up in Denver on October 15th at Summit Music Hall… Are you excited for this one?

-What can we expect to hear from you that night?

-Any chances of bringing out Vibe Street when playing that new tune?

Future Joy: We are sooooo excited for Summit! We got to link up with Float Like A Buffalo in Tulsa, OK last week and the show was huge energy. Denver get readyyyy!!! We plan to play high energy and show Denver a taste of everything we got. We brought Vibe Street to play the collab at our headliner back in July, but since we’re opening we probably won’t have features on October 15th at Summit. We may or may not be joining the Float guys for a special encore though, wink wink. Its also our last show in town before we head south!

Party Guru Press: Anything exciting happening for the remainder of the year? What plans or goals can you share with us regarding performances or new music leading up to 2022 and beyond?

Future Joy: Performing at Summit in Denver and then we truck it to 10.23 at VooSwar in Atlantic Beach, FL and then 10.28 we’re bringing our renegade RV stage to Hulaween. After that we have some festivals in December and February already coming together in Florida. We don’t want to see anymore snow, so find us down south for winter. 🙂 We have big plans of hitting every festival we possibly can next summer!

Party Guru Press: So tell us… how is your biggest canine supporter, Gus doing? Still Repping the “Future Joy” merch?

Future Joy: Gus is the best!!! We adopted him last October while on the road in Virginia. So he was there while the song was created. He loves the road and we truly think he saved ussss!!! FurrGusSon Joy our saviorrrr!!

Party Guru Press: Lastly, we’d love to know… would you two consider yourselves “Party Gurus”!?

Future Joy: We Definitely consider ourselves Party Gurus! We linked up for a stream back in 2020 and we’ve been on the guru train ever since. Woo!

With all the excitement around their newest single as well as their ambitious plans for the coming year, Future Joy is without a doubt among the most exciting up and coming duos to look out for. Their future shows featuring their marvelously wide range of genres and high energy performances are something worth getting excited about.

Their desire for a friends and family environment within each of their projects is admirable and inspiring, as is their passion for collaboration with equally exciting artists. Its clear that they thrive off of the creative freedom that comes with sharing thoughts and ideas with like-minded artists who share similar musical visions. That is something that reflects highly throughout their latest release.

We’d like to thank them for their time spent getting back to us for the interview, and we thoroughly look forward to watching the progress of this incredibly promising duo. We’re wishing them the very best with all of their future endeavors. Thank you, Future Joy!

Decadence AZ Phase 2

This New Year just landed a huge upgrade with fresh additions to the year’s greatest party. Relentless Beats and Global Dance have outdone themselves again, bringing in the hottest talent alive to make the experience as wild and fantastic as humanly possible.

New Additions

We now get to look forward to an unforgettable night with Griztronics, a special collaboration between Subtronics and Griz. With this special back-to-back, we can expect a twist from Griz back to his Dubstep roots. Tag-teamed with Subtronics’ experimental low-end sound it should be a tasty treat.

That’s just the beginning to the new additions, we will also be welcoming to the stage EDM legends Zeds Dead to curate a ride full of intensity and emotion that few can deliver as gracefully as these two men.

The Swedish duo Christan Karlsson and Linus Eklow, otherwise known as Galantis, will also be joining the party.  Galantis explores a range of musical styles, from Techno to House with Pop and Jazz influences. For anyone who hasn’t seen them, it is hard to describe their sets as anything but fun! Last time I saw the duo I just couldn’t stop smiling; it’s just that kind of music.

Next on the list let’s talk about Joyryde. The name really does a great job summing up the vibe. If I were to be driving around some sweet stolen whips, you better believe I’d be bumping Joyryde.  As he says himself, “For best results, Install sub woofer in vehicle, Invite friends & Gas Pedal, Gas Pedal, Gas Pedal.” I have to agree and I’m looking forward to the ride.

Underground Artists

With so many new additions it’s difficult to give each artist the credit they deserve. I’m happy to see some recently underground musicians making their way to such a renowned platform as Decadence.  Artists like G-Jones who has been blowing up the scene with his Ineffable Truth tour this year. As well as Whipped Cream who is delightfully experimental with huge sound design that does not disappoint. If you are looking to hear something new be sure to check her out.  Space Jesus will be making his appearance, as well, to bless us with wonky Bass jams.

That’s not even the end of it, either! There’s so much more talent to be heard this December 30 and 31.  The full line up is listed below:

AC Slater
Adam Beyer
Dab the Sky (Dabin b2b Said The Sky)
Dillon Francis
Follow The Fish
Gerry Gonza

Ways to improve the guest experience have already been implemented. These include increased flooring and dedicated walkways at and between the stages, additional entry and exit gates at the main stage, as well as a reconfigured and improved VIP experience, that will create better flow and shorter wait times, and increased chill stations and staffed water resources.

“As a company, it has always been our intent to improve Decadence year after year,” says Relentless Beats founder Thomas Turner. “I have read each comment, and I hear the fans loud and clear. Cherub – The Fox Theatre – 11/2/2019

On November 2nd, Cherub kicked off the new month at the Fox Theatre for one of their Baby Angels tour stops. It was certainly an electrifying end to Spooky season, and the perfect start to November. Gibbz, a solo artist based out of Brooklyn, opened up the show with an incredible live performance. He is undoubtedly a man of many talents, looping catchy beats, playing his keyboard, riffing his guitar, and singing his heart out effortlessly during his set. Following Gibbz‘s set, stagehands prepared for Cherub as fans began to fill up the venue. Being that this show was just after Halloween, the theatre was still filled with people rocking their costumes, getting their full fill of Spooky season.

The Fox Theatre Lights Up as Cherub Takes The Stage

Finally, the room illuminated full of color as Cherub came on, and you could immediately feel the excitement and energy as the crowd roared. They played some of their biggest hits throughout the show. After all, it wouldn’t be complete without the bouncy beats of “Monogamy,” or the nostalgic feels that come with their song “Dancin’ Shoes.” The duo put on an electrifying and energetic show. As a result, the crowd jumped, clapped, and even laughed at times.

Cherub - The Fox Theatre - 11/2/2019

The night was intimate and filled with funky electro-pop sounds unlike any other. Cherub went above and beyond with their performance, consequently the crowd was fully immersed and interactive with their music. The funky duo ended the night with a bang. As the crowd reached its peak energy, they began to play their hit song “Doses and Mimosas.” You could feel the happiness and satisfaction that poured over the room. In other words, it was the perfect cap off to a truly unforgettable night. There are many reasons why Cherub is truly an amazing act to see, above all, they have the type of energy and sounds that will surely have you grooving and dancing like never before.

Day of the Deadmau5

Canadian native Joel Zimmerman, better known as the major music pioneer, Deadmau5, just rocked Colorado with two undoubtedly mental nights at America’s favorite venue. Deadmau5 delivered one of the most innovative productions of our time: the Cube v3. In fact, it was coded and mastered by the king himself. When Deadmau5 revealed the new Cube v3, Denver could only pray for the icon’s return to Red Rocks in 2019. Zimmerman is seemingly a perfectionist, as many would guess, crafting and coding every tiny detail of his newest baby. The Cube has the ability to spin on its axle, as well as cater to “on the fly controls” for the screen. In short, that means that they can put anything on the screen and do anything with it at any given time.

Besides the beauty of the visual production, the sounds captured the hearts of all those who attended the winter party. On the first of November the attendees were hit with below-freezing temperatures, but Zimmer was in his element as he ostensibly loves performing in the cold. The two-day extravaganza showcased many different sounds from open to close, hosting quite the selection of Mau5trap family. Direct support consisted of the rapidly exploding techno killer, i_o, as well as the ever-so-creative Getter. The line up also brought in heavy hitter’s Callie Reiff and LIGHTS.

Banging Tunes

Once doors opened, a flood of energy entered the sold-out show as the sounds of Callie Reiff began to play. The multi-talented woman kicked off her career in 2016 with the release of “Tin Machine”. The New York native is a power house, with releases on A-Traks Fool’s Gold Records and notable recognition’s from EDM front-runners like Diplo. Callie Reiff came at us both nights with major hits and a variation of banging tunes. The self-taught drummer added live aspects to her set by including a drum pad, making her insanely fun to watch.

Unparalleled Alt-Pop

Based out of Toronto, LIGHTS filled all our alt-pop needs. LIGHTS boasts an impressive one million monthly streamers and over a hundred million US streams total. LIGHTS released “Skin&Earth” which pushed any limitations and exceeded all expectations, further proving her uniqueness in the scene. The high energy performance was not something to be reckoned with as it created an unparalleled experience for show goers.

Dark Techno Killer

The highly anticipated i_o made his Red Rocks debut on Friday night. Without a doubt, he demonstrated exactly why he has blown up into the dark techno killer that he is. i_o collab’d with Tommy Trash in 2017, really providing the most exposure to launch his stellar career. On Friday night we got techno two-stepping as his set was absolutely absurd, dropping new and old tunes. i_o will only continue to flourish with his death-defying tech.

Getter, who ended his most recent tour early after tough criticism of his changed sound, did not come to mess around. This show was his first performance on the Rocks, making this set a mile-stone in his career. The “Visceral” artist bumped out major new heater “Heartless” which came out in the middle of last month. Getter played a variety of different sounds, even mixing in some crowd favorite “Terror Reid” stuff in the last fifteen minutes to everybody’s surprise.

Deadmau5 Cube v3 Masterpiece

The forefront of all things progressive-techno has Deadmau5 written all over it. The meticulous producer never fails to bring the best of the best to his shows. He always pays the closest attention to detail: whether coding his cube, scrutinizing every sound in his music, or even shaping the mau5 head into the lasers. It is impossible to deny that the human dynamo brings nothing short of a story-telling rather than just a set.

The visuals on his cube were images of the year; capturing popular meme’s and opening his set with scenes from notorious video games. Getting the full experience, it was only proper that Deadmau5 bring out a vocalist to sing his Grammy nominated tune, “Raise Your Weapon”. This Day of the Dead weekend was nothing short of perfection, furthering the belief that Deadmau5 is one of the largest pioneers in dance music.

The group will continue to perform on tour around the country, bringing in other Mau5trap family as well! The Cube v3 is enough of a show for anyone as it provides one of the most innovative ideas to the dance music scene. If you would like to check out more tour dates go ahead and click, here!

San Holo Delivers a Very Vibrant Performance with redrocks1

Summer is officially here and Red Rocks season is in full effect. Dutch DJ San Holo was the most recent artist to make his Red Rocks Headlining debut this past Thursday, June 13th. Being that it was his headlining debut, San made sure to make the most out of the event, hosting a pop-up shop the day before the show at Mirus Gallery. The pop-up shop featured exclusively available merch, boba tea, meet and greets with San Holo, and even his grandma was in attendance all the way from Holland. Giving back to the fans, even more, San also held a private show Wednesday night for a select group of lucky fans in Denver’s Rino Neighborhood. Both of these events helped set the tone for what would be a thrilling and intimate debut the next night at Red Rocks.

Appropriately titled redrocks1, the event carried a full line-up with performances from Duskus b2b EastGhost, Taska Black, Chet Porter, Clams Casino, Shallou, and of course San Holo. San, who burst onto the scene with remixes of classic hip hop songs filled with future bass sound, redefined his sound last year with the release of his debut album album1. San, who was originally a member of a small rock band, playing bars in Holland, found a perfect way to blend his past as a guitarist into electronic music and delivered a fresh, uplifting, and emotional album with album1.

In the same sense that album1 was a sign of maturity and growth as an artist for San, his redrocks1 performance highlighted his innovation of blending live instrumentation into his set. With smashing guitar leads, filled with atmospheric and sweeping sounds, San’s performance was as uplifting as it was emotional. The entire night was filled with great vibes as San’s stage presence and appreciation for his fans was shown, San brought his family out on stage, thanked the crowd over and over, and gave away 3 guitars to lucky fans at the end of the night. For those who were not lucky enough to be in attendance, the event was also streamed live on Youtube.

redrocks1 was a magical performance that took the crowd through an emotional roller coaster, while always remaining positive and uplifting. This, coupled with San’s obvious appreciation for his success as an artist and genuine love for music, made for a night that will not soon be forgotten. We can not wait for redrocks2 and as San always says ‘Stay Vibrant.’
