Band Poolside onstage beneath bright lights

Bringing laid-back, approachable melodies to the Ogden Theatre on Tuesday, February 6th will be chillwave champions Poolside. The Los Angeles-based band plays what listeners have termed daytime disco music. Their sunlit sound is appropriate for lounging by the water or cruising along the beach in a convertible.

It will be dancing room only at the Ogden, though! Fans will come ready to move their feet to the beat and shake off the Colorado winter cold. Warming up the crowd will be The Undercover Dream Lovers. Also hailing from L.A., their silky, psychedelic indie-pop style is a surefire mood brightener.

Breaking Out and Making Waves

Poolside founders Jeffrey Paradise and Filip Nikolic met in Paradise’s hometown of San Francisco in 2004 at one of his events. It took several years for the duo to gel into a full-fledged project. Nikolic was playing bass with indie outfit Junior Senior at the time and joined Paradise’s project Paradise Boys for live gigs. After some collaborative studio work in 2006, other efforts kept the pair busy. It wasn’t until 2011 that they released singles “Do You Believe” and “Take Me Home” to positive reception. Helping them break through was their interpretation of Neil Young classic “Harvest Moon.” The cover was spun often by LCD Soundsystem frontman James Murphy during his DJ sets and is a perfect example of the way Poolside blends retro vibes with current electro-funk sensibilities.

Poolside’s 2012 debut album Pacific Standard Time led to their sound being termed “daytime disco.” The record could easily have served as the soundtrack to Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. They followed it up five years later with the record Heat, which brought more danceable tempos and diverse influences to their disco-driven flavor. Jazzy jaunts, tastes of the tropics, and funky bass lines adorn their sophomore offering.

Nikolic parted ways with Poolside later on in 2017, and Paradise kept the project afloat himself. In 2020, he produced Low Season, which featured collaborations with various guest vocalists who helped fill Nikolic’s creative void. In addition to dropping their third record that year, Poolside unleashed another epic cover. “Shakedown Street” commemorated the 25th anniversary of Grateful Dead singer Jerry Garcia’s passing. Featuring reworked tracks and glowing guest appearances, an upbeat partner release titled High Season followed in 2021.

Bringing Beach Vibes Nationwide

In time to brighten the holidays and prepare fans for their upcoming headlining tour, Poolside released their latest album in October 2023. Blame It All On Love is “about relationships, passion, suffering and coming to terms with hard to face realities,” Paradise proclaimed when announcing it on socials.

The album features a fantastic array of guest artists. A pair of releases with Ben Browning, tracks with upcoming tour mates MUNYA and slenderbodies, and the first single, “Float Away” with Vanshire, are a few highlights. One of my favorite tracks on the record is “Where Is The Thunder” with Ora The Molecule, a shorter bop-along song with infectious hooks. Lush and dreamy, “Each Night” featuring Mazy tones down the disco funk and turns up the introspection.

Grab Your Towel and Flip Flops

As you prepare for the holidays, instead of Mariah Carey or another muzak version of Silver Bells, give your ears the gift of good tunes! Jam to Poolside and check out the opening act for the Ogden show, The Undercover Dream Lovers. Their latest LP, Time Lapsed, takes listeners on an audio joyride perfect for cruising on sultry summer nights. The funky beats layered with synth-driven sounds would have fit right into CBGB during the 1980s new wave craze.

Check someone off your shopping list, or get the whole crew a groovy pack of presents, and make sure you remember one for yourself! Secure your tickets here, and kick back with a cold one. It may be fireside season now, but you’ll want to splash around in February when these chill rockers bring the heat to Denver!
