Tinashe and Shygirl are hosting a co-headlining tour this fall. They will visit 13 cities across the US in the ultimate powerhouse collaboration.
In honor of this momentous occasion, we’re giving these ladies the proper feature they both deserve. We’re highlighting their backgrounds so you can know them better.
Let’s start with Tinashe, a singer, actor, dancer, and former child star. Born in Kentucky, Tinashe Jorgensen Kachingwe, mononymously known as Tinashe, began her career at a young age. By eight years old, her family made the move to Los Angeles so she could pursue her dream in earnest. She secured roles on The Polar Express, Two and a Half Men, and Out of Jimmy’s Head, the latter earning her a Young Artist Award nomination.
Although successful in acting, she followed her true passion: music. In 2007, she joined the girl group The Stunners, who were briefly signed to Columbia Records and served as an opening act for Justin Bieber’s first world tour. Disbanding in 2011, the group offered Tinashe a glimpse into producing. She immersed herself in Pro Tools and released her first mixtape, In Case We Die. This masterpiece, with its four singles, caught the ears of execs at RCA Records and she got signed to the label.
What followed were her second and third releases, Reverie and Black Water, and her debut album, Aquarius. These included a variety of singles like “2 On” and “Pretend.” They also led to a series of collaborations and tour support of artists like Nicki Minaj and Katy Perry.
She’s graced the pages of magazines Vogue, Dazed, and Nylon in addition to performing as Mimi Marquez in Rent: Live, all while steadily making music. She debuted her highly anticipated second album Joyride and even released a short film and digital album, Nightride. She competed on Dancing with the Stars, left RCA for Roc Nation, and continued to create music.
Fast forward to today and Tinashe has six albums, countless singles, magazine features, and a plethora of TV and movie appearances. Always striving to be better than yesterday, Tinashe continues to hone her craft and put forth music of which she’s proud.
Now on to Shygirl. Née Blane Muise, Shygirl is a British, no-nonsense DJ, producer, songwriter and rapper. As if that wasn’t enough, she’s also founder and co-owner of the record label Nuxxe.
Contrary to what her name implies, Shygirl never tiptoes around the uncomfortable. She’s not one for small talk — she says what she means and mean what she says. She tackles topics like sexuality with freedom, lacing them with just the right amount of grime, filth, and vulnerability. She’s forward thinking and experimental, which comes through in her music.
Growing up in the U.K., Shygirl thrived in school. She studied practical photography at the University of Bristol before delving into music full time. Her friend and now longtime collaborator Sega Bodega encouraged her to try her hand at music. In 2016, they released the single “Want More” together. With Bodega’s guidance, Shygirl grew more confident to take musical risks. And it’s all paid off.
Following her debut single, she launched “Msry” and “Nvr,” two markedly open, moody and emotional tracks. She then came back with the EP Cruel Practice, where her silver-tongued prowess is on full display among the rolling beats.
She has a filthy pin-up girl aesthetic and I am here for it. Her music is bold and in your face with the right amount of sensuality, which is exactly who she is. Resonating with the masses, her music defines particular moments in time. Her 2020 EP Alias reflected the world’s desire to not be in lockdown, to be out together in the world. It offered a much-needed, hedonistic escape from reality. Coupled with a piece of her track “Uckers” lending to a viral TikTok moment and Rihanna using her music in commercials and runway shows, the world is embracing all that is Shygirl.
Both women push the boundaries of music. They fearlessly enter the male-dominated arenas and create powerful, provocative and empowering songs and albums. They’re both encouraging of each other and aspiring performers, and only wanting to help further permeate the proverbial glass ceiling of music.
For a truly transformative and inspirational show, catch Tinashe and Shygirl’s co-headlining event. The tour stops in Denver at Mission Ballroom on November 13th with a show dripping in sensuality and bad bitch energy.
