Flume – Red Rocks – 8/5/19

As one of the more elusive artists in the electronic music scene over the past few years, Flume has taken a methodical approach to release his music and touring. Breaking onto the scene with his self-titled project Flume in 2012, it would be another four years before the release of his second album Skin. Skin showcased his ability to take the elements of what fans had already loved and infused them into more of a pop music world.

Fast Forward to 2019 and Flume fans were again beginning to wonder when we would hear new music. Without almost any warning, March brought the release of a new mixtape, titled Hi This Is Flume. The project is a 17 track mixtape that showcases what Flume has been up to since we last heard from him. The mixtape is filled with features from the likes of Slowthai, JPEGMAFIA, Kucka, Sophie, and Eprom. Alongside the mixtape came an announcement that Flume would be playing only one non-festival headlining show in the US this year at none other than Red Rocks.

Flume and Friends, which was originally scheduled for one night, saw a huge demand in tickets and was quickly expanded to a two-night event. The event garnered support from two of the featured artists on the Hi This Is Flume tape: Slowthai and JPEGMAFIA. Slowthai, a British grime artist, worked with Flume on the track “High Beams,” off his most recent project. The world of Grime is ever-expanding, with Slowthai at the forefront of artists to watch for. The abrasive, in-your-face attitude over largely percussive beats brings a ton of energy. Also featured on the event’s line-up was JPEGMAFIA, who worked with Flume on the trashing “How To Build A Relationship.” With the release of his project Veteran in 2019, which was widely viewed as a top 50 album of the year, Flume continues to find young and upcoming talent, and is one of the first to expose them to the electronic music world.

Coming fresh off a Lollapalooza set that had Flume trending worldwide on twitter, the bar was set high for Red Rocks. The set opened with Flume spray painting, which would give way to a whole bunch of on-stage antics, which included: potting plants, using saws, smashing things with a sledgehammer, and so on. While these certainly sound like all the surprises one could handle, we also got guest appearances during his set from Slowthai, JPEGMAFIA, and Kai, who delivered a beautiful rendition of “Never Be Like You,” as well as Reo Cragun, who Flume recently worked with on the single “Friends.” The set spanned Flume’s discography from early tracks like “Insane,” “Tiny Cities,” “You and Me (remix),” to gems off of Skin, to unreleased new music featuring Vera Blue.

The two-night stint was an eclectic emotional roller coaster and only EDM’s #1 Bad Boy, Harley Streten, aka Flume could deliver a show in such a fashion. With unreleased music being played out at Red Rocks, with a few singles and a small EP out just this past month, it looks like more work from Flume is imminent. We can’t wait to hear what wild creations he has for us next and can’t wait for his next stop here in Colorado.
