On Saturday, February 6th, Adventure Club took to Mission Ballroom for a sold-out stop on their massive North American Throwback Tour. With the help of nostalgia, bass drops, and plenty of lasers, the duo transported the audience back to the 2010s. Through this all-out celebration of the genre, Denver fans got to relive the height of melodic dubstep.
Turning Back Time
On this stop, Denver artist Blossm opened the stage, followed by SABAI, who delivered a feel-good, pop-infused set. On direct support, Orlando-based producer AVELLO kicked off the nostalgic energy. His set was full of edits of pop hits from the previous decade, encouraging the crowd to sing along.
Later in the night, Adventure Club would drop their new collab with AVELLO, calling him “one of our best friends.” He was a perfect pick to prepare the audience for a trip back in time to the 2010s.
The Legacy of Adventure Club
Canadian duo Adventure Club consists of Christian Srigley and Leighton James. During the 2010s, they cemented themselves as one of the most important acts in melodic dubstep. This throwback set was the perfect opportunity to celebrate their legacy.
They opened with a cinematic intro featuring gun-slinging clips from The Boondock Saints (1999) before teasing one of their biggest hits: their remix of Yuna’s “Lullabies.” It didn’t take long for them to amp up the energy, dropping into their signature red and blue lasers and growling bass.
In just two hours, Adventure Club delivered an impressive number of classics, covering electronic hits from 2011 and onward. Their set featured crowd favorites like Flux Pavilion’s “I Can’t Stop” and “Bass Cannon,” Skrillex’s “Cinema,” and Zeds Dead’s “Eyes On Fire.” The night felt like an ode to a bygone era before influencers, when YouTube channels like UKF, Majestic Casual, and MrSuicideSheep were the primary tastemakers.
Despite the theme of the night, Adventure Club did not strictly play throwbacks. They teased plenty of unreleased material, like a forthcoming track with Flux Pavilion called “Goddess.” They also explored outside the melodic variety of bass, delving into trap, big room house, and heavy brostep. Before the encore, the duo played a particularly recent track: their cover of Alex Warren’s “Ordinary.”
A Highly-Anticipated Encore
After letting the crowd simmer in anticipation, Adventure Club delivered the encore moment that everyone wanted. They dropped their remix of Flight Facilities’ “Crave You.” This track was not only a breakout hit for the duo but also for the genre as a whole.
Featured on MrSuicideSheep, Adventure Club’s spin on “Crave You” helped birth hoards of new melodic dubstep fans. Thanks to the continued love for the track, it’s safe to say it won’t be lost to the sands of time.
On the Denver stop, one surprising thing to note was that the younger generation certainly turned out in force — even though this was a throwback set. With renewed interest in the genre, could this mean a revival of the more melodic, more growly iteration of dubstep? If history is bound to repeat itself, we’ll be happy to see Adventure Club’s iconic sounds come back to the forefront of dance music.
